How to Support Your Child’s Growth at Every Level

Building Bridges—How to Support Your Child’s Growth at Every Autism Level

Supporting Your Child, One Step at a Time
Now that we’ve explored the autism levels, let’s dive into actionable ways to nurture growth and foster strengths! There are so many strengths to celebrate!

Whether your child requires support, substantial support, or very substantial support, here are some universal strategies to empower them while creating a supportive environment at home and beyond!

1. Communication is Key

  • For Level 1: Encourage open discussions about feelings and needs. Tools like emotion charts or simple role-playing games can help

  • For Level 2 & 3: Use visual aids, simplified language, or AAC devices to bridge the communication gap and empower self-expression

2. Routines That Empower

  • Create a predictable daily schedule that aligns with your child’s preferences and comfort zone

  • Incorporate flexibility training in small, manageable steps, like changing the timing of an activity by a few minutes at a time. Baby steps!

3. Celebrate Their Unique Interests

  • Autistic individuals often have specific passions—use these as gateways for learning and connection

  • My girl loves making videos! So we set up our camera and role play situations and behaviors we are working on. She loves to act them out and then watch them, learning through play is the best way!

4. Build a Sensory-Smart Environment

  • Identify your child’s sensory preferences and create a toolkit to support them (sensory bins, noise-canceling headphones, or a calming corner)

  • Balance stimulation: Provide opportunities for sensory input or reduce overwhelming factors based on their needs

5. Strengthen Connections Through Play

  • Engage in their preferred play style, whether it’s structured games, imaginative storytelling, or repetitive activities

  • Use playtime to teach social turn-taking, problem-solving, or cooperative behaviors

6. Self-Care for Caregivers

  • Remember, you’re an essential part of your child’s support system. Prioritize your well-being by seeking respite, joining support groups, or practicing mindfulness. Trust me, I know this may be the hardest part, but as the saying goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup!

A CAPE Reminder!
Every small victory is a big step forward. Celebrate your child’s achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities for growth, learning, and connection.
